(36)Tendril of a plant

(36)Tendril of a plant

·         The tendril of a plant is a threadlike, specialized stem that “climbing plants” use as support. We have a section of grapes we grow along the vines, however the deer got to it before we did so I took a picture of grapes from a grocery store. Regardless, both have tendrils that allow the grape vines to grow and cling on to the wires that are guided throughout the plant. August 7th, 6:15 p.m, Kitchen

(39)Vascular Plant Tissue

(39)Vascular Plant Tissue

·          Vascular plant tissue is the conductive system of the plant consisting of the xylem and phloem. The xylem tissue conducts water while the phloem tissue conducts food. A tree is a common vascular plant due to its roots that conduct water, minerals, and provide assistance for the plant’s photosynthesis. August 7th,  6:50p.m, Backyard

(40)Vitamin E- natural source

(40)Vitamin E- natural source

·           Vitamin E protects cells from damaging effects from oxidation. It is sometimes added to food to slow down spoilage. A natural source of Vitamin E can be found in common spices and herbs. This picture is of the herb German Thyme that we have growing in our garden; however there are other natural sources of Vitamin E growing such as sage and parsley. Aug 7th 5:57, Garden

(3)Amylase

(3)Amylase

·           Amylase is an enzyme that helps break down sugars, carbohydrates, and starches in the digestive system. The enzyme converts starch and glycogen into simple sugars. My brother Nico is showing the saliva on his tongue that contains Amylase. August 7th, 11:05 a.m, Nico

(4)Annelid

(4)Annelid

·          Annelids are worms of the phylum Annelida. Their body is divided into both external and internal segments. This is one my brother and I dug up in our front yard. We were waiting for a rainstorm so that way they would all come out, but in Charlottesville it’s been dry. August 7th, 12:20 p.m, Front Yard

(6)Arthropod

(6)Arthropod

·          Arthropods are a species of invertebrates with jointed limbs and a segmented body. They have an exoskeleton made of chitin; Arthropds include arachnids, crustaceans, insects, and centipedes. In this picture it is hard to make out the spider, but I found it, and its web, by almost walking right through it trying to find a tendril on one of our grape vines. August 7th, 5:55 p.m, Garden

(8)Batesian mimicry

(8)Batesian mimicry
  •          Batesian mimicry is where the insect evolves to disguise themselves as a predator of those they are a prey for. This protection is common among butterflies like this one nesting on the flower. August 7th, 3:30 p.m, Front Yard
